Flexible Furniture
Built to last: Fleximöbel
To complement the unique character of the Stadtwirtschaft and each of its spaces, the goal was to create flexible furniture that could be used in all rooms—as well as in courtyards—for a wide variety of events. The objective was to provide versatile and adaptable furnishings for workshops, theater performances, or relaxation for up to 50 people.
First Workshop of 2023
An initial workshop on the flexible furniture was held in April 2023. During the workshop, current and potential members of the yard community discussed how the furniture would be used, what functions they should serve, and who might participate in their implementation.
Second Workshop 2024
In the second part of the “Fleximöbel” workshop series, the next steps were discussed, with a focus on developing a design and producing the furniture. Various potential production partners were considered. Ultimately, it was decided to pursue a collaboration with the Faculty of Applied Arts in Schneeberg at the West Saxon University of Applied Sciences in Zwickau.
Leopold Rubahn, a student, developed a design for versatile, stackable, and easy-to-transport pieces of furniture and subsequently created a prototype.
Implementation in 2025/2026
The Holzkombinat Chemnitz was ultimately entrusted with the implementation of the Fleximöbel project and the production of a small batch. The organization sought assistance from volunteers in workshops and support from the FabLab of the Stadtfabrikanten Chemnitz—a key player in the Stadtwirtschaft—for the metalwork.
For mass production, the prototype was modified once again to enable more cost-effective manufacturing using standardized components and to further enhance its functionality. The color scheme was also adapted to match the Stadtwirtschaft’s visual identity.
Handover and Use in 2026
In March 2026, eight sets of flexbible furniture—each consisting of a two-seater with a backrest on wheels, a table, a two-seater bench, and two stools—were finally handed over to the Stadtwirtschaft team.
Since then, the flexible furniture have been used regularly at small and large events organized by the Stadtwirtschaft and are freely available to key players of the Stadtwirtschaft for their own events.
