ESCHE LAB Limbach-Oberfrohna
In the Footsteps of Esche
A workshop for creative textile projects
Along with Wolkenburg Castle, the Esche Museum is one of the two municipal museums in the city of Limbach-Oberfrohna and invites visitors on a journey through about 300 years of textile history in the Limbach region. Just in time for the opening weekend of Chemnitz 2025, the European Capital of Culture, the Esche Lab opened its doors here.
On the museum’s third floor, there is a workshop for creative work with a special focus on the arts of knitting, embroidery, and garment making, which is complemented by an installation in the museum’s permanent exhibition. Here, visitors can turn textile designs into knitted fabrics or finished one-of-a-kind pieces and experience modern knitting alongside historic machines. Another highlight is the “Kniterate” knitting machine, a digital flat-bed knitting machine that visitors can use after registering.
In addition to various workshops—where participants can, for example, make their own bags using sewing machines—there are also regular craft gatherings where interested individuals can come together and exchange ideas.
