Discussion on the Future of the theater building "Schauspielhaus"

In the list of projects for the use of infrastructure funds recently published in the press, the Chemnitz city administration has indicated that it is pushing forward with the idea of merging drama and opera at the Opera House on Theaterplatz and that it does not plan to allocate funds for a new building or the renovation of the Schauspielhaus. This latest development in the dispute over the location of Chemnitz’s Schauspielhaus was preceded by discussions regarding two options for the future site of the spoken-word theater and has attracted statewide attention.
Viadukt e.V. and Stadtforum Chemnitz view the preservation of an independent Schauspielhaus as vital to the city’s cultural life and consider the old Schauspielhaus at Park der Opfer des Faschismus to be the best choice for its location. We would like to discuss with representatives from city administration and the cultural sector, an expert on theater architecture, and the public whether the city needs its own theater and what the best path to a solution might be.
