Meet the USA

On Friday, June 12, the German-American “Meet the USA! Culture. Dialogue. Encounter.” event will take place at the Stadtwirtschaft Chemnitz. The city of Chemnitz is organizing the event in collaboration with the Consulate General of the United States of America in Leipzig, with a specific focus on personal encounters, opportunities for exchange, and open interaction.

Starting at 3:30 p.m., interested attendees can mingle over coffee and cake with the Consul General, the Mayor, alumni, and current scholarship recipients of transatlantic exchange programs. The German-American Institute of Saxony is hosting the afternoon event. Please RSVP by sending a brief email to
ta@dai-sachsen.de. Media representatives are also invited.

Will Europe and the U.S. grow closer again after the current political crises, or will they drift further apart? And does German foreign policy affect our daily lives? The city of Chemnitz invites you to a public roundtable discussion at 4:45 p.m., where current issues in German-American relations can be discussed. The panelists will include Laura-Louise Scheller, a representative of the Federal Foreign Office who currently works in the Division for the United States and Canada, and Prof. Dr. Kai Oppermann, who holds the Chair of International Relations at Chemnitz University of Technology. Admission is free. Members of the media are also invited.

From 5:45 p.m. until 10:00 p.m., visitors to the Stadtwirtschaft event yard can look forward to a cultural program featuring live music and literary performances. The 3x3 basketball court at the Stadtwirtschaft will be inaugurated together with young players from the Niners Chemnitz. Musical entertainment will be provided by the Big Band of the Municipal Music School and “The Soldiers Chorus,” a high-energy pop and rock band. In addition, the Europe Direct office in Chemnitz will provide information on relations between the EU and the U.S. Admission is free. Media representatives are also invited.

At 7:00 p.m., the Chemnitz Adult Education Center invites you to a wine tasting of American wines at the Stadtwirtschaft. The event offers insights into the development of California’s wine industry: from its beginnings to its current status as the most important wine region in the U.S. A selection of wines will be available for tasting at the event. The event is free of charge; registration is requested at: www.chemnitz.de/winetasting.

Background:
With the new title “Meet the USA!,” Chemnitz is further developing its German-American event format and placing an even greater emphasis on dialogue and participation. The event reflects the city’s growing transatlantic relationships and its international network, and also commemorates the 200th anniversary of the U.S. Consulate General as a diplomatic mission in Central Germany.
